Shaw farm of 200 acres in Kinloss, and which

their farms in our hands for sale, so that we
hope to be able to apply the bulk "of the

UNDER THE AUSPICES OF THE
SONS OF SCOTLAND.
A Big Day Spoiled by )train—A Large Crowd
and interesting Competitions.
Pipes of the misty moorland.
Voice of the glens and hills.
The droning of the torrents,
The treble of the ribs?
Not the braes of broom and heather,
Nor the mountains dark with ram,
-Tor maiden bower, nor border tower,
Have heard your sweetest strain ! -
Dear to the Lowland reaper •
And plaided mountaineer.
To the cottage and the castle
The Scottish pipes are dear? •
Sweet sounds the ancient pibroch
O'er mountain, loch and glade ;
Bnt the sweetest of all music
The pipes at Lucknow played.
The great northern Caledonian
games, this year, notwithstanding the
unfavorable weather, received a new
lease of life. In viewofthe institution of
so many camps of the Sons of Scot-
land in Huron and Bruce district
during the year past, the Caledonian
Society of Luckncw, under whose
auspices these games' received such.
world-wide renown, finding there was
a strong feeling that some joint gath
er:ng shouid be held, decided e
all privilege and co-operate with the
sist-r societies. At a recent district
'meeting of the camps at Wingham, 'it
was unann'i nously resolved to hold the
joint gathering at Lncknow.
This course was a wise one. The
Caledonian Society of Lucknow is the
pioneer Scottish society of the district,
—at anyrate, the first one to institute
and carry on successfully these annual
"gatherings of the clans." It was
fitting, therefore, that the first joint
meeting should be held here, and a
hearty endeavor made to revive that,
old-time interest and enthusiasm
in cleanly managed Scottish sport
which, in years gone by, made the
district famous.
Then, again,, this •',co-operative'
principle will tend to allay those local
antipathies which were only too ap-
parent in recent years. Sectionalism
has proved only a waste of energy.
It is better to hold one rousing gather-
ing than a dozen scattered weaklings.
-The history of Scottish sport in this
district is a notable one. The Luck -
now Caledonian Society wag' organized
array Lack in the ; f''s-- in 1:•173. Its
beginning w,:s small and unpretentious
but the national , ;pint was
strong—of the order that, surmounts
all difficulties. Its officers and laymen
were workers and their enthusiasm
bounded only by their humanity.

This year the preparations for the
entertainment of both visitors and
competitors surpassed any previous
occasion and ail that was lacking to
make the gathering a success was fine
weather. Every thing the officers and
laymen of the local camp of the Sons of
Scotland could do was done, and h ad
the one thing needful been supplied
the games of 1892 would have gone
down to history as the greatest event
in the annals of Scottish sports in
Lucknow. This is saying a great deal,
but from the many encouraging
reports received from all sections of
the country, we have not the slighest
doubt but the crowd this year would
have fully equalled, if not surpassed
the great ten thousand gathering of
1886. But in this 'they were .disap-
pointed. For 3 or 4 , days previous to
the day set for the games it rained
almost incessantly, and it was hoped
that by at least Tuesday the preverbal
"three days rain” would have finished
up, but it didn't and what few breath-
ing spells it took between showers
were only of short duration. By
Wednesday morning the weather had
improved slightly, but the appearance
of the gathering clouds gave very
little reason for hope thaat the day
would be fine. It was indeed a sad
pointment, and the repitition of
the "wet day" of seven years ago
seemed almost inevitable. The gloomy
appearance of the weather, however
did not deter a crowd from coming,
and by noon fully three thousand
visitors were in the village
Shortly after one o'clock the mem-
bers of the different camps of the
Sons of Scotland assembled in the
Town Hall,where they formed into
procession and marched down Camp-
bell street to the Park in the following
order:
Pipet.; Johnstone, Thain and 'McLeod.
Standard Bearer.
Boys and Girls in Costu ne.
Highlanders in Costume.
Camp Albyn Lucknow.
Camp McPhersnn. Kincardine.
Camp Bonnie Jean, Ripley.
Camp Caledonia, Wingham.
Camp Inverness, Goderich.
,-Camp Rosylin, Tiverton.
Camp JIcCrimmon, Underwood
Scarcely had the long procession Ieft
the hall when tlie rain commenced,
and on reaching the grounds it was
found impossible to conduct the pro-
gramme outside, and after a short con-
sultation of the Chiefs it was decided
to adjourn to the large hall, where the
different dancing and ,•piping competi-
tions were competed for. The -chair
was taken by Mr. A. S. Campbell, of
Kincardine, while 'seated on the plat-
form were representative Chiefs Alex.
