--The county association of the
Womans Christian Temperance LTnion
will meet in Walkerton 'on Tuesday
next, and will be attended by a number
of lady delegates from Lucknow.
—This has been a dull week for
our merchants but a busy one for our
farniers„ who have been making the
most of the splendid haying weather.
The crop is , unusually large and of
splendid quality. rs
—A "staggering" monument to the
baneful effects of whiskey was painfully
visible in the village on Wednesday, as
a poor fellow endeavored to work his
,passage up Campbell street. One horn
more would have floored him.
—Messrs. J. 211,, Cliff and W. J.
Brumpton left on the early train
Monday last for Manitoba. , The for-
met- goes to Brandon and the latter to
Red Deer where his brother is engaged
in general business. He took a car-
load of new furniture with him.
—The new regulations of the
Ontario School of pedagogy require
that candidates for professional high
school and first-class certificates 'shall
attend the school for four months
and subsequently serve six months as
high school assistants before being
allowed to write on the prescribed
examination for certificates.
—Say young man, there is one thing
you cannot do. You can't make a suc-
cess in life unless you work. Better
men than you have tried it and failed.
You .can't loaf around street corners
and taverns. smoke: cigars and tell
foolish stories, drink whiskey and
sponge on somebody else without
making a failure in life.

• .Master Henry Ga,rdner, of Zion, is
visiting friends here.
An account was recently rendered,
against a firm in town for fifteen cents
and was at once settled by issuing a
cheque on the hank of Hamilton for
that amount. The cheqne was duly
honored on presentation, and as suffi-
cient funds were found deposited there
no further action can be taken co
collect the damages. It was lucky
for the firm.
The work of hay -making has been
progressing rapidly and many farmers
report a finish for the season. Wheat
is ripening . very . fast and will
soon need the 'attention of all help
available as the crop is large in
acreage end the bulk something
extraordinary.
