[OST IN THE -HOUSE !
bbe Excitement in the Neighborhood.
few evenings ago a younge couple
p reside'a fe.w miles east of the vil-
e'went over to 'spend the evening
a neighbor's house.. After enjoying
y' themselves for some time they started
,for home about half -past nine o'clock,

house they discovered a faint light in
one of the upper rooms. As they. had
•
left the house at six in. the evening,
with everything apparently all' right,
the sight of the light naturally alarmed
them. After looking at it' for some
time they came to the conclusion it
was `something unnatural, and not dar-
,iing to approach nearer, they turned,
and the old black mare was not long
in finding her way back to the house
from which she .had so lately left.
After the now thoroughly, frightened
'couple had told the folk what, they had
seen,, the young man of .the house vol-
untered to go back with him and in-
.• vestigate the cause of the mysterious
light, while the young wife waited
their return. The two brave young
: men started, this time taking a lantern
with them. On arriving at the scene
of the mystery, and after - walking
around the house a few times, be
looked up at the window and exclaim-
ed " By George, it's a light, rallright,"
and then beat' a hasty retreat. The
two now thoroughly scared young men.
held a consultation and summoning up
all their courage, they decided' to go
into the house, and so one of them
with the whip and the other . the site,
they startedfor the door. But to
a sight met their gaze that fairly froze
the blood in their veins and made the
hair of their heads stand on end, for
there, right, in front of them, was the
track of a female foot leading right
up to the door. Mysterious as things
were before, now they were ten times
worse, and the man of the house em-.
phatieally declaired he would -not go in
for fifty dollars. There was no other
help for it, and the old black mare had
again to retrace her steps across the
fields to the neighbor's house. As the
two young men had to report their
utter failure to find out the cause of
the mysterious light. the old gentle
anan of the place, accused them of be-
ing scared cats,as he clrew on his boots
and walked out to the rig, and told
them to drive over again. But as
they approached the haunted house
and their hearts keeping time to the
cautious steps, the silence was painful

" who's here," the little sister poked
her head out from under the bed
clothes and asked them • " what was

come home unexpectedly, and finding
no one in the house, had gone to bed
and left the light burning just a little.

times and yet used by many. He
advocated the factory system as the
best means of procuring a uniform e
quality of butter, and thinks that by'
the use of modern appliances Canadian
butter can compete with any in the
world.
Mr. McD. Allan, of Goderich, spoke
on fruit growing. . The neglect of
orchards and gardens was fruitful of
discouragement: He would advocate
good cultivation without much crop-
ping between the trees, and recom-
mended fertilizing .with gond hard-
wood ashes and barn yard manure.
He advised thorough draining where
the soil required it and would scrape
and wash the trees to destroy the work
of the bark louse.
r Mr. Hobson, of, Guelph, spoke on
the breeding of stock.
that while stock for tree
:
He believed
ding purposes
'should show it in their appearance it
was of paraXuount importance that the
pedigree should be all right also, as by
constant care in breeding special quali-
ties were transmitted to the stock.
This was proved by the experience of
the late Hon. Geo. Brown in laying
the foundation pf his famous` Bow Park
herd, when after making a selection
he required to/dispose /dispose of his stock and
hegin again. with new blood. •
James Rowand, M. P., gave his own
.experience which corroborated the•
opinion expressed by Mr. Hobson.
He also referred to the milking quali-
ties of the Short Horn and believed
that they could be developed much
more they are now by a judicious train-
ing. No cow would develop milking
qualities that were only allowed to
suckle her calf, for three or four months
after calving.
There was a general discussion taken
part in by many farmers when much
valuable information was elucidated.
The meeting then adjourned, all being
well pleased with the afternoon's work.
A union meeting with the Patrons
of Industry was held in the evening,
a report of which appears in another
column.. .
