Missionary Meeting
• The annual Missionary meeting of
the Methodist church was held last
Monday evening. The church was
comfortably filled though the weather
was very unfavorable. The pastor
occupied the chair, who in the course
of his remarks pointed out that -$43,-
000 were raised last ,year for missions
• by the Methodist congregations in
Canada, being. an increase over the
preceding year of more than $20,000.
Of this amount Lucknow contributed
$141.50, being an increase over the
previous year of more than 850.00.
The thanks of the meeting were given
the collectors of the past year, coupled
with their re-appointrcent. Rev. A.
Sutherland, D. D., of Toronto, Secre-
tary of the Methodist Missionary.
Society, was the chief speaker. He
referred' principally to the missions
carried on by the society among the
French of Lower Canada, to the
Indian tribes of the Dominion and to
the mission established in the empire
of Japan. )3y various cogent argu-
ments he showed the necessity there
was for their vigorous sustenation and
advance&ent. The meeting respond-
ed to the extent of $105.00 which no
doubt will he increased to the amount
raided last year if it be not exceeded.
-The tdeeting ' was interpersed by
spiritual songs sung by the congrega-
tion and by the Rev, J. J. White' and
his daughters Grace.

Thuisday :—The Free Press on Tues-
• day recorded the death of one of
Lodon's oldest citizens and friends.
On• Monday last, at his son's residence,
Lucknow, Mr. John Bryan pass.ed
away in the 65th year of his age.
Mr. Bryan came to London in 1848,
and has been identified with its life
and growth, mote Or less continuously,
for the forty-three years. He was well
known and highly respected by, at
least, all the early settlers •of the
Forest 'City. He was a strong man
physically, bnt a little over a year ago
he had a severe attack of "la, grippe."
This left hilt with partial blindness,
which in time became total. Then his
general health began to fail, and
finally cancerous trouble of the
stomach carried him off. He suffered
intensely during his illness, but his
last moments were tranquil and trust -
An impressive service was held
on Tuesday evening at the residence
of James .Bryan. Reeve of Lucknow,
in the presence of a great number of
friends of the Tamily, Revs. W. J.
Connors, J. S. Coiling and J. B. Mc-
Kinnon beingpresent. OnWednesday
morning the remains were bniught te
London, and were met at the station
by friends of the deceased and conveyed
to Woodland Cemetery for interment.
Ex -Mayor Campbell, Ald. W. W.
Fitzgerald, Ald. O'Meara, Capt. John
Williams, A. G. Smythe and Maurice
Baldwin acted as pall -bearers. Rev.
Evans. Davis, • of St. James'. Church,
London South, officiated at the grave.
The Orange societies of London, of
which Mr. Bryan was for a leng time
a member were unable to join united-
ly in the funeral procession, owing to
the shortness . of the notice. One
pleasing feature ofthoughtful.kindness
was the presentation by the Royal
Black Preceptory, 346, of a beautiful
floral cross to be ,laid on the grave.
Mr. Bryan leaves three `limns. John
