THE Manitoba Clevernment have
decided
decided to appeal to the Privy Council
in England against the decision of the
Canadian Supreme Court which de- '
clared the Manitoba School Act ultra
' virus. In the event of the decision of
the Supreme Court being sustained hy,
the highest tribunal, it is said the
•Government will still refuse to fall
back on the old law -Which sustains
separate schools. They will pass an
act freeing the supporters of separate
schools from the payment oE public
school rates, but will not make any
-provision- for -the-support-of-separate-
Schools. If this can be done the Prov-
ince will' be freed from the respond:"
bility of contributing to the Support of
these schools and those who use them
will have to maintain them out of
their own private funds.

men are deserving of credit for the

cently published census figures for the
actual population of the Dominion, we
find that our per capita consumption of
liquor is nearly 3 gallons, and our
direct per capita expenditure is about
$7.80.

the township of Ashfield, and Wm.
Stothers resigned his position as second
deputy -reeve of the township of Ash-
field.
Moved by John McKenzie, seconded
by Thigh Chambers, that the resigna -
tion of Wm. Laue be accepted. Al-
though we regret to lose your services,
at the- same time it gives*us pleasure to
know that you are chosen to a higher
and more lucrative position in becom-
ing clerk of the county of Huron, and
we trust that your unassuming and
genial manners, and close attention. to
business may long hold the confidence
of the Members of that body.
A number of applications for the
clerkship of the tdwnship were placed
before the board, who recognized that
a number of capable gentlemen were
applicants.
Moved by. H. Chambers, seconded
by John McKenzie, that William
Stothers be clerk in the place of Wm.
Lane, resigned. -Carried.
