Omens or War ' •
It is said that, a great majority of
the births this year are male children.
Those who have studied the matter
say this forbodes war, as the except-
ionally large male birth rate is in

demand. If war's • dread .alarm will
keep q (iet until these young gentle-
men are old enough to go to the front,
the .price . of wheat will not be mater
ially affected this year.

Workmen ,Anniversary
The anniversary services of the
Ancient Order of United Workmen
in Lucknow will be preached in the
Methodist church at eleven o'clock on
Sunday, 0 ctober llth, by 'the Rev. J.
S. Colling. ' •The members of the order
will assemble in their lodge room 'at a
quarter ' past; ten, and march to'the
church in a body. The members ,of
the Dungannon and other lodges are
cordially invited to be present and
take part in. the services.

From Joy to Mourning
'A. very large processsion of mourners
'followed the remains of the late Mrs.
F: McLennan to Lochalsh . burying'
gaound on Saturday of last week, and,
great sympathy was expressed ioward
the bereaved husband and relatives of
the young woman so suddenly taken
away. , The deceased was a very
promising young woman, daughter of
Mr. F. McLennan, con. 1, Huron, and
was buried in the robes that , five
weeks ago were the robes of a happy
and joyful de.
Young People at Work
A society of.the Baptist .Young
People's Union has been organized in
correction with our Baptist church.
The following officers were elected :—
President, Mr. Fred K. Baker ; Vice -
President, Miss H. C. Archibald ;
Sec-Treas., Miss L. J. On meren ; Rev.
J. B. McKinnon, Ex -Officio. Five
committees were appointed with four
members in each, the heads of,com-
mittees being as follows : Membership
Committee; 'Miss M. McKinnon ;
Devotional and Instructive, Mr.James
Memory ; Social and Music, Mr. Chas.
McKinnon ; Mission and Temperance,
Miss ' "H . C. Archibald ; Executive
comm ittee consisting of the officers
with Pastor McKinnon as chairman.

an earnest christian life among the I
members, to increase them• acquain-
tance, to provide literary and musical
entertainment for its members, arrange
for bible study and to aid , in every

Cosgrove Concert Co.
The Cosgrove Concert ' Company,
who . will be pleasantly remembered °by
many of Lucknow's citizens, will give
one of their delightful entertainments
in the town hall here on 'Tuesday
evening, Oct. 6th. Of this popular
troupe the St. Thomas Journal says :
"The entertainment last night by the
Cosgrove Family was one of the finest
and most unique ever'held in the city."
Committed Suicide
man named Thomas Champion,
an old resident of West Wawanosh,
committed suicide 'by hanging at
Whitechurch on Thursday_-
morning...
Deceased was about 70 years old, and
during a temporary fit of despondency
committed the rash act. Dr. txordon,
of Lucknow,was called . in, but life
was extinct before . he arrived. No
cause can 'be assigned • for the suicide.'
He was at' Wingham on Wednesday.
Passed Away
The death Occurred in this village
on Wednesday.. of last week - of Mr.
A rchy McCarrel, son of Mr..' Robert
McCarrel, in the.23rd year of his age.
The young man had suffered for many
months past with -consumption, and
although no hopes could be entertained
for his recovery, his death .was none
the less sad to his .father and sorrow-
ing friends. He was a young man
greatly respected by all who knew
him. His funeral on Friday last was
largely attended.
Gone to His Rest ' • ,
There passed peacefully away at his
residence in this village on Sunday
night last, an old and esteemed citi-
zen in the person of Mr. James.
Bowering. Deceased, who was ' 72
years old, was among•the early pioneers
.of Kinloss . township, and, till fotir or
five years- ago resided on his farm in
the first' concession, when he and his
family• moved into the village. He
was a devout christian, and for many
years was a member of the Lucknow
Methodist church. The remains were
=interrec in . the family plot in th
Langside cemetery on Tuesday after-
noon last. .
C O F Sermon
The brethren of Court "'Sherwood,
Lucknow, and surrounding courts
attended St. Peter's church. last Sun-
day. • The, day *as beautiful and a
large number of Foresters" gathered
from :Holyr'ood', Dungannon, .White-
church and other courts. Rev. Mr.
Connor preached to a well filled
church.' • His sermon was highly
appreciated by all who had the oppor-
tunity to •be present, and he is
certainly deserving of the respect and
admiration of the people of Lucknow.
The sermon was an earnest appeal to
the brethren to secure. their pass -word
to a higher and nobler court. Appli-
cants-. might be rejected from the
courts on earth on account of sickness,
intemperance and other causes, but all
who wish may enter . the High Court
above. The sermon w'a$ evangelical
• and will long ' be remembered by the
many brethren who attended last
Sabath. Court Sherwood certainly
Made a 1 fine appearance, and the
Canadian Order of Foresters is cer-
tainly a noble and progressive order.
Salt -vs Sugar
,The following incident occurred in
Brutmpton'sstore the other 'day : A
man getting 75 cents worth of salt
and a.lady getting a dollar's worth of
sugar. The roan took his salt and
left;, the. lady did some other shopping
and then began to gather. her parcels
to leave. Looking at her large
bag

she said, "Now I declare, that • 1
man took my sugar and left me his

Tract Society •
• The Lucknow branch. of the Upper
Baptist church on Wednesday even-
ing. A fair audience was ,present.
Rev. R: McNabb, president, presided.
Mr. F. Pecover, sec-treas., read the
annual! report which was enbouraging
and creditable to the Society. Over
the year.. Of this amount. $11,09 had
been donated to the parent Society
and $18.00 expended in the purchase'
of tracts, which were `distributed
within the bounds of the Social
Society. The officers and committee
were re-elected and a few . more added.
to .the committee.. Collectors were
also appointed who will call on the
friends of the Society for contributions.
The Rev. Dr. Moffat, Secretary of the
Society, was present, and delivered an
interesting address, subject, " Chris-
tian Life in Earnest." The work of
-the society among sailors, lumbermen
and in prisons and reformatories was
dwelt upon and warmly commended.
The society has ten colporteurs em-,
ployed, three being in, Manitoba and.
seven in. Ontario. Large quantities of
bibles and testaments, tracts and
religious. books were distributed dur-
ing the year. / The society's work is
commended to •the' Christian public as
worthy of cordial support.
THE FALL SHOW.
Every 'ding heady for the Successful
Exhibition:
Everything is now in 'readiness for'
-the---great- great -fall -show -here -on -Monday
and Tuesday next, - and if the weathhr
proves favorable the exhibition will'
surpass anything in the line ever seen
in the village. As usual the large
half will be openedto the public on
Monday evening and all our citizens
as well 'as those . from the county
should be present. •
Parties.. exhibiting fowl should
remember not to bring- them till the
second day, as they will not be shown
in the hall this year. All ' members
belonging to the. Society are entitled.
to two admission tickets, and they can
get them from the secretary.' The
price of admission to adults is . 15
cents, and children will be admitted
for 10 cents as usual. If you have
anything to exhibit don't fail to bring
it to the show.
The speeding in the ring contests
will commence sharp at two o'clock on
Tuesday afternoon. ' A, large number
of first-class horses will take, part in
the trotting events. ,
A large ring has been, fenced off for
the accommodation of cattle near the
sheds. -
Through • the timely exertions of
Mr. John Murchison the • Canadian
Pacific Railway will have their grand
display of the products of the North-
west at the show. The consignment
is under thecharge of Mr. D. L.
