There are so many instances of
farmers being defrauded when dealing
with strangers who represent that they
are,sellinnbgoods so much below what
they, maybe obtained at from our own
dealers, that too much care cannot be
taken when coming in contact with
these gentry. Farmers should trade
with the dealers who are here, and
who, having to depend. on then; for a
living cannot afford to palm off worth-
less goods for what benefit may be
obtained.
The At Home
The basement of the Methodist
church was filled on Monday evening
last by an appreciative audience, on
-the occasion of the "at home" given
by the young people of the Epworth
League. The room was- tastefully
decorated with curtains, flowers, pic-
tures, etc., while the many handsome
large easy -chairs • and sofas gave the
place a very home -like appearance.
The chair was agreeaably filled by the.
president, Mr. D. C. Taylor, and the
many selections of music, recitations
and speeches given were all greatly
appreciated. •

The Journal of Commerce gives good
advice when it advises everyone to
take advantage of the good crops to
pay 4; Get out of debt should be
the motto for the year. Both busi-
ness men and farmers should straight-
en up rather than spread out. In
prosperity it is well to prepare for
adversity. Good crops do not come
every year ; they are rather the
exception than the rule. They should
be utilized to make a general clearance
of old debts.

As will be seen by notice elsewhere,
the partnership • • existing between
Messrs. Berry & Days, druggists, has
been dissolVed by mutual consent, and
in future the business will be carried
on by Mr. Days. This is a first-class
business and while we are -very sorry
to see 111r. Berry retire from active
business in -the village, we congratu-
late Harry in becoming full proprietor
of one of the finest drug stores in the
county.
A Good Move
.A t a recent meeting of the Toronto
school board, a good move was made
in passing a resolution favoring the
adoption -of -a-public school-Ourrieuluire
which should only include what is
absolutely practical and useful in the
way of education, leaving higher but
less, immediately essential branches of
education to be dealt with bYthe high
schools, which will afford an opportun-
ity for the'more, general teaching of
hygiene in the common schools, and
relieve the pupils from the murderous
forcing system now in vogue.
Dungannon Show
The directors of the Ashfield and
Wawanosh Agricultural Society are
making a big push to boon: their fall
show in Dungannon on Wednesday
and Thursday, 14th and 15th of
October. They are offering to the
public a splendid prize list of attrac-
tions, and the different speeding in the
ring contests alone are worth the
price of admission to all lovers of good
horses. The managers of the show
have displayed a good deal of enter-
prise and should be liberally patron-,
ized by the farming public. The
Dungannon show will be held one
week after our own local fair and we
hope the citizens of Lucknow will turn
out in large numbers and help to make
the showa success.
'Caledonian Games
Wednesday last was the date on
which the Great Northern Caledonian
gathering has been held in Lucknow
for the past fourteen years. With the
exception of one wet day these games
have been a uniform success and have
gained--a--world-(vide-reputation,--The-
arena has been the scene of some of
the keenest athletic contests ever
witnessed before an assembled multi-
tude. Owing to the absence of leading
athletes the Society decided not to
hold games this year, but have already
in contemplation plans for bringing
together, next year, the largest gather-
ing that has yet been brought together
at any games on this continent, par-
ticulars of which will he given as time
progresses.
He Was Insane
A young man named Albert White,
of this village, was brought before
Magistrates Lawrence and Bryan on
Friday last, charged with being a
lunatic and. dangerous to be at large.
For some time past the young man's
mind would become deranged for a
few weeks at a time, and during these
spells theypeor fellow labored under
thedelusion that the Queen had given
him the farm that is owned by Mr.
Malcolm McDonald, just east of the
village, and greatly ta the annoyance
of Mr. McDonald and his family, he
would visit the place and demand
possession of the farm. Application
has been made for his -1
to the London

Good Accommodation
Through the timely exertion of the
ever popular Mayor of Kincardine,
Mr. James A. McPherson, the old
London train has again been placed
on the line and our railway accommo-
dation is exceedingly -good. Passengers
for London or other stations along the

of having to .leave at 10:40 in, the
morning s formerly and N. -rah three or
-four hours at Wingham to get a train
going south. The morning train from
London also arrives here an hour or so
earlier, but it would be a still greater
advantage to our business men if the
mail clerks -ere oilowod 10 run through
to Kincardine, thus affording us a
morning mail to the north. Registered
letters could then be sent by
