OBSERVATIONS OF THE EXAMINATION,
The examiners state that English subjects
seem to be imperfectly taught in many schools,
There was a serious failure in parsing andl,
analysis, In teaching composition greater
attention ahould be given to letter. writing,
Those preparing candidates for the entrance
should not lose sight of the fact 'that 35 marks
are given fer neatness,
The result of the examination however is
exceedingly creditable to the' teachers of West

A petition . was received from the
ratepayers of Lucknow and Kinloss
asking that Mr. Wm. Henderson's
property be taken from the Kinloss
school section No. 7 and annexing it
to Lucknow school section. Moved
by councillor Murdoch, seconded by
councillor Lyons that ihe prayer of
the petition be granted and that a by-
law he prepared- in the matter.—

Fund about to be granted to Kinloss.

The recent rains have made a vast
improvement in the appearance of
crops generally, and no scarcity' of feed
is now expected,
Fall wheat is almok all harvested
and is reported a good crop.
Mr. Henry Scott reports a head of
oats hearing 165 grain pods or sacks,
a large number of which contain two
grains each.
Mr. and Mrs.I,yon, of Londesboro,
spent a,few days last week visiting
their daughter Mrs. J. Spindler.

Miss Nettie Stobie, of Seaforth, is
at present the guest of Mrs. R. E.
BerryLane.
picking seems to be the most
important ,job now on, hand. Loads
of merry looking pickers can be seen
-daily wending their way berryward,.
but when the question of sugar conies
up it makes a great difference inthe
appearance of things. •
Mrs. W. H. Reid, sr., 18 at present
very ill. ,
A valuable mare belonging to T. E.
Finlay broke her leahone day last week
and in consequence had to be shot.
Some parties have threshed • the fall
wheat and report from 30 to 35 bushels
per acre and A No. 1 sample.
Mr. Geo. Farris started on Satur-
day for Duluth, where he expects. to
spend the remainder of the summer.
George carries with him the best
wishes of his many friends.
Mrs. T. Broderick, of Detroit, is at
present visiting at her father's, Mr.
John Kelly.
Mr. P. Austin, of Kingsbridge,
paid us- a friendly call last week, also
Mr. D. Mc1VIurchy, of Kintail.
Miss Nellie Clare, of Detroit, is

Mrs.' Scheuck, from near Fargo,
Dakota, is visiting in this vicinity.
There 'are rumors of starting a joint
stock company's store in connection
with the Patrons bf Industry in Luck -
now.
Mr. P. Jury, of the 13th concession
of West Wawanosh, met with an acci-,
dent while -unloading hay a few days
ago. He fell from the mow unto the
side of the rack, and hurt his side very

Mr. P. ,Mclienzie, one of the most
enterprising farmers in our -cotnty is
still further beautifying his . already
beautiful farm by building a large
brick residenee, which will hencefor-
ward he one of the 'pleasant features
of the fourth. The stone work .
done by Mr. McDougall, Mr. • Gay, of
Dun'gannon, having the contract 'for
the wood work, and Mr. S. Murdoch'
for the brick work.
Alex,'s visits to Paramount will
cease now that the attraction has
vanished, but Dave will be on hand
next Friday if he can.
The night express is creating havoc
along the line. A few weeks ago a
fine horse, the property of Mr. James,
Little, was run over by it and 'killed
and the -other -night -it ran against an
innocent sheep and completely demol-
ished'it.
CLOVER VALLEY.

Valley, held an open meeting on Tues-
day, July 28th, which was well
attended, the room being filled to ita
utmost capacity. The leading talent
for miles around took part and
rendered an excellent proaramme.

Valley associations was postponed
'owing to the lateness of the hour.
A fel,;‘, weeks ago the 2nd concession
base ball team, and the Lochalsh twain
met in -base ball array at Coral Wreath.
°Wing to the lateness of the hour• only
five innings were played, when the 2nd
boys left to play EL game of foot ball.
At the close the score' stood 16 to 13
in, favor of the 2nd team. The boys
speak highly of their opponents and
are justly proud of their success, as
the Lochalsh boys have carried the
belt for the last two years for the best
team in this section of the country.
The wasp-waisted -foot ball team of
the 2nd and the great giant team 'of
the 6th con. meet in a shoulder to
shoulder conflict on the 2nd con. next
Saturday evening. A: good time is
expected. o admission to grounds.

The crops in the Valley which were
thought to be a complete failure have
revived after the refreshing showers
of the past few week3, and now pre-
sent a fine appearance in some places,
The wheat crop has been harvested
and some of it threshed. The yield is
very fair and the grain of excellent
quality.'
Messrs. W.,J. McGuire, D. Olarke,
and A. D. Paterson, of this vicinity,
left for Verdun, Manitoba, orfuesday,
the 28th July. We wish them every
success.
