Grand Reception Given to the

Banquet on Tuesday Evening.

For the last few years it has .been
the custom in the Council of the
County of Bruce to remove the June
meeting from the County sent to the
seaport towns of the County where
their deliberation could be, strengthened
by the refreshing "brees of Lake
Huron or the Georgian Bay, but to
Lucknow belongs the .. honor of being
the first inland town, outside of Walk -
ton, where the County legislators have
ever met.
Some people object to le roaming

the history of the county of Bruce means also
the history of Lucknow.
Our citizens feel fully satisfied that the
claims of the village have always rete}yed
fair consideration at the hands of the various
county councils of the county of Bruce, and
we flatter ourselves that the meeting of the
present council in our midst betokens continued
good will. Permit us therefore again to
extend you a most cordial welcome with the
hope that you will thoroughly enjoy your
visit among us, that you will be able to cherish
kind reucemberances of generous treatment,
and that your deliberations will display such
wisdom as will reflect credit on yourselves,

bers of the ,County . Council .a right
royal reception and welponle. In this
request he has been met with an unus-
ually hearty response from the citizens
generally. A citizens committee was
formed consisting of working, recep-
tion' and decorating branches, • Each
department did its work in a highly
satisfactory manner. But to the
ladies of Lucknow, (always foremost
in anything they contribute their as-
sistance), must be given the highest.
commendation. . The banquet, which
was by all means the most important
feature of entertaining the visitors
could never have been the magnificent
success it was, but for the ladies, and.
to them cannot be given toomuch
credit for keeping up the' credit of
Lucknow's hospitality.
THE RECEPTION. -
At 3:30 the firemens band, under
the able leadership of Professor Stand -
haft, left the town hall, followed bv'a
large number of citizens for the sta-
tion to meet the reeves and deputy
reeves from the north. At the depot
had already gathered a • concourse of
people, among whom were many ladies;f
As the iron horse steamed in the band
struck up a lively tune. The guests
were escorted to the vehicles awaiting
them, and following the band were
taken down town to their different
hotels. Opposite the temperance hall,
a shower carne up, which produced the
remark from one agricultural member,
" We have struck Luck -now." Ex-

toast, and Dr. Scott, of Southampton,
-sang perhaps the most popular song of
the.evening, " The Maple Leaf."
Ontario Government. Peter Mc-
Kenzie thought he was dove tailed
into making a speech, but nevertheless
felt proud to have the honor of ming-
ling among the reeves of the County
of Bruce, Mr. Mowat, Sir John and
others,• he believed all these men had
the country's good at heart. He was
sorry to hear of Sir John,s near ap-
proach to death, and •d.d not think
there `was a man alive in Canada who
did not feel as he did. Mr. McKenzie
eulogized W. R. Meredith as well.

the system that has made Canada the land of

the • brightest `gem in Her Majesty's crown.
When we consider the importance of our local
institutions, we are pe.Sainly bound to honor
our County Council who satisfactorily discharge
the ardnaus duties devolving upon them.
Our County. Council being in immediate touch
with the people, being. of the people; by the
people and for the people, and on account of
its corporate functions has a very responsible
duty to perform. We are proud to say that
this duty has'been well discharged, and is be•
ing well; discharged by our County Council,
with honor to itself and progress to the County,
notwithstanding the numerous eifficulties.that
had to be contended with. The County of
Bruce is now one of the most flourishing mun-
icipalitiee in our Province, .and. this is rine in
no small degree to the ability, to the ener;;y
and . to the perseverance of our County
Council.
Our Institute has comp in for a share of your

their official capacity, and in bidding you

desire of every citizen, th .t yen may be
enabled to enjoy, to the`fullest extent, the
best hospitality out village 'can afford.

• THE BANQUET.
The best,, the most unique, and the
surprise of11 present was that held
in the town hall, the walls of • which
had been handsomely decorated with
bunting, flags and pictures, as well as
a quadrangle ceiling decoration of red,
white and blue. Be it said to Luck-
new's credit it was a banquet without
liquor ; speaking, singing and calis-
thenics composed the programme.
Never has such an entertainment been
given in Lucknow which has met with
such well-deserved 'applause. Sharp
at 8 o'clock Mr. Bryan took the
chair, and called on Rev. Mr. McNabb
to pronounce •a blessing. .On his'
right was• Warden McDonald, and, on
his left M. Campbell, Esq., Lupknow's
first reeve, and Mr. Shaw, the County
Solicitor:

else than teach on the cramming style?
Examination fol;owed examination so
successively that it was almost im-
possible to give a child or even a
youth a knowledge of anything except
that which would put him through his
examination. Mr. Yule .also . gave
some.examples of the absurdity of the
present law. •
Mr. Lawrence also replied to the
toast.' •
TIIE TOASTS.
The Queen, Governor General and
House, of Commons replied to by Mr.
Shaw and Mr. Morrison.
Army and Navy was responded to
by Major Scott, .the worthy lie ve of

style, who' said. he was somewhat en-
cumbered.in being aware of the fact
that this l auquet w to lest tttttil the
early hours ,on \Vechiesclay , morning.
Leaving jokes aside, said the Major,''T

County of Bruce. Mr. Campbell
said .it was ,not necessary for him to
say anything', about the county at this
board. .' All present were as well
acquainted . with, it as he was. You
have heard, said he, of various institu-
tions, and are apt to look over our owd.
We ought to look more at our :county
council and township council. Bruce
is the only county in which tolls were
never introduced. He was the first to
introduce perambulating councils.
As Equal Righters, he and Mr. Shaw•
would yet get the ladies: vote.
Our' sister municipalities met with
a hearty response from Mr. Proudfoot,
of Goderich. Mr. Proudfoot decidedly
opposed making any special claims for
'Huron, but "all 1 ask is, that you,
the Bruce members,' will come down
on'Thursday next to Goderich and we
will use you about square." Mr.
Proudfoot also said it was the first
banquet he had ever been at where
there was no liquor.
Our Guelete, replied to by Warden
-McDonald, of Huron township, who
thanked the people for coupling his
name. H'e had always been more,or
less identified with the village. Our
county has made great progress in
public works, education, etc., since
1869, and will. still 'go on doing well.
Mr. Moore could assure the good
people of Lucknow that their name
would go from one end of the county
to the other,.particularly the ladies.
Mr. Collins admired every man,
woman and child in Lucknow. • •
The Reeve of Saugeen said he was a
new member, and as such had not
much to say, but must extend his
thanks to the laches of Lucknow. He
did not much believe in club swinging.
He never saw a better class than those
around him.
The ladies were given due justice to
by Mr. Jermyn, of Wiarton, and if
space would permit we should like to
report his speech in full.
• Mr. McPherson also eulogized the
ladies of Lucknow, as also did Mr.
Murdoch.
