Upon the banks and braes of Bonny Doon,
Like mine, beneath the hawthorn boughs,
Thy sunny hours were glad and brief ;
But, now we've crossed the sea,
Arid thou art withered, flower and leaf.
Not so, his memory, for whose sake
I in my bosom bore thee far and long.
He whom a humble flower would make ,
Immortal in his song.
I stood beside the cottage bed,
Where the Bard peasant first drew breath;
A low thatched roof above his head.
And a rough straw couch beneath.
But I have stood alongside the pile
His monument that lowers to heaven;
The homage of a nation's isle,
To the peasant bard is given.
Though brief the race the Poet ran,
And dark and rough the road he trod ;
.He lived and died, in soul a man,
The itnmage of his God,
And when upon his funeral day.
Men stand his low earth south arouud,
As with meek honaage—which we pay—
To consecrated ground.
And consecrated it is ;
The last and hallowed home of. one,
Who lives upon all memories,
Though with the funeral gone.

Of monuments or turns.

On Friday evening, 24th inst., a

other friends assembled at the manse
and presented Rev. Mr. Davidson,
previous to his departure to Manitoba,
with a purse nf nearly $80, ancom-
Panied by the following address :
To Rev. Mr. Davidson, Langside :
DEAR SIR,—We, the members and
adherents of Langside Presbyterian
church, becoming aware of your inten-
tion of shortly taking your departure
from our midst, cannot allow you to do
so without in some slight degree show-
ing our appreciation of the invaluable
services you have rendered, this com-
munity. During the nineteen years
that you have labored amongst us you
have been most assiduous in your
endeavors to advance the morality,
promote the general welfare and
awaken an interest in Christianity and
church work in the minds and hearts
of those who were placed under your
care by the Good-Shipherd, and -as we
acknowledge our gratefulaiii

manner in which .you have discharged

Tonorro, April 29 --The strong, bright.sun-
shine of these gladsome spring days speak
with siren voice to the average run al member
of the provincial legislature, and he is fain to
forsake the halls of legislation with its puffed-
up, transient glories for the practical- realities
of the farm. The legislature has begun hold-
ing morning seisions. and it is expected that
all pressing business- will be rushed through
and prorogation take place on Friday or
thereabouts. The, present session, while not
altogether devoid of event, has not been ,very
exacting on the members. With the exception
of the Budget presentment, there have been
few long -debates, and very few divisions on the
issues of the day. However, a good deal ot
quiet and useful legislating has been accom-
plished ; and, after all, it is the furtherance of
timely and needed legislation that the
Province looks for and not a holocaust of long-
winded ' discussion. • Outside theCabinet;
perhaps the busiest man in . the House has

Joseph Tait, or the "Peo le's Joe" in local

parlance. He has not belie 's record in the
city 'council, and is one of thea
t members
in the House. His speaking abilities are of_ a
very nigh order, and, though a Scotchinan and
' therefore supposedly matter-oHact, is Oils of
the brightest wits of the day,

Mr. Davidson made a very suitable
and feeling reply,expressing his

The Local Option Law to be Tried.
t•
A convention of the'. West Bruce
branch of the Dominion Alliance was
held in the town- hall, Kincardine, on
Monday afternoon at two o'clock.
The president, Rev. Thos. Snowden,.
6f Ripley, occupied the chair. After
the meeting. wea opened by prayer,by
ttev. A. Meltinnon, of -Lucknow, the •
secretary, H. P. Chapman,, read the
minutes of the previous meeting , held
in Tiverton and also the Constitntion;,
after which all persons present were
presented with a.neat copy of the con-
stitution and an invitation to become
members of, the alliance. • Mr. F. .8
Spence then gave a very.lucid expla. .
nation of the working of the loca-
option law, contrasting its opinions
with the license law and the Scott act.
His arguments were 'forciole and easily
comprehended, owing to the dramatic
manner in --which every -point at issue
was discussed. As a means ofeduca.t.-
inghis hearers in the true principles of
temperence, Mr. Spence's .addressess
are valuable. The following resolution
,was carried unanimously :—',That in
the opinion of this convention it iA
advisable to try the local option law
in the townships of Bruce, Kincardine,
Huron, and the villages of Lucknow
and Tiverton, they being' the 'most
advisable municipalities to begin with.
