The Family Pew
What would the ministers in Luck -
now think of the situation if they
found themselves in the position of a
brother minister at Collingwood. At
the latter place the minister's wife got
a new girl who was told she could
go into the minister's pew when at
church. The first Sunday she preceded

the minister, to church. When she
arrived there the minister was sitting

Holstein Friesian Cattle
Mr. John 13arkwell, of Ashfield, last,
week purchased a very fine looking
two year old Holstein Friesian bull.
from Messrs. H. and W. F. Ballart, of
Taviatock, Ont. Mr James Hunter,
of the 12th con. of Ashfield, has also
largely invested in this great milk
producing breed of cattle, and has
purchased a fine three year old bull, a
four year old cow and a heifer calf.
They are all fine looking animals, .and
the cow was imported from Holland a
few years ago. The introduction of
this great breed of milk and butter
cattle will be a big advantage to the
'farmers in this section, and we hope
the above named gentlemen will „be
,richly rewarded for their enterprise ,

The calisthenic exercises by the little

different movements they went through
was exceedingly well clone, and was
certainly the chief attraction of the
evening. Their band also deserves
great praise. The programme from

The " At Home"
We have attended a' great many en-
tertainments, but the " AtHorne" given
by the )(Ming people of the Epworth
League on Monday evening last, sur-
passed anything of the kind we have '
ever seen. The large basement of
the church was handsomely arranged
with flowers, ctirtains, tables, pictures,
etc., which gave it the appearance of
a richly furnished drawing room.:It
was indeed a credit to the Society,
and reflects much credit =the skill of
those who had the management of the
entertainment. The programme , of
choruses, solos, recitations, etc., was
also ,much appreciated by the large
audience. The chair -was occupied by
Mr. D. C. Taylor, and a large share of -
the pleasure of the evening was due to
his ability in that position.

Death Oa Pioneer
One by one the old -pioneers, who
had hewn out for themselves homes in
the dense forest, are passing silently
away to that bourne from which no
traveller has returned. It is our sad
and painful duty this week to chronicle
the death of an old and, • highly
respected resident of the village;
which took place on Saturday night
last at his residence on Outram street.
William McDonald, Sr., the subject of
this notice, was born in Perthshire
Scotland, 77 ;years ago, and emigrated
to Canada in the year 183.3. He
settled' in Montreal, where for some
years he successfully carried on the
brewing business. He then removed
to the county of Lanark where he
remained for five years, aft -which he
came to the township of Kinloss in
1854; having purchased a farm a few
miles from the village of Kinlough.
About sixteen years ago he removed
with his, family to Lucknow, where he
had continuously resided till his death.
Deceased was a life-long Reformer.
He was a good neighbor and a kind
friend, and enjoyed' ,the respect and
eateelft of all who knew hini. He
leaves two sons and three daughters to
mourn his loss, his wife having died,
many years ago in Montreal. The
remains were interred in the Kinlogs
cemetery on, Monday last and were
followed to their last resting place by
a 'large number of neighbors and
friends. •
Terrible Explosion
The terrible explosion which
occurred at Petrolia, April 9th, killing
James Albert Bradey, DuncanMc-

a gloom over that town. Thousands
of people _have visited the fatal, spot,
and willing hands have collected, all
over the field, pieces of the remains of
the victims. In one case the heart of
one of the men was found by itself,
