When is a lady well .dressed?
It is not our intention here to
answer this question fully,only
to say that a Parisian lady
never considers herself well
dressed unless her hands and
feet are covered with the neat-
est, cleanest and freshest kind
of gloves and boots.. ' In con-
nection u with' this matter we
have only to. say to the ladies
that our'stock of gloves of all
kinds, an.1 especially kid in

Toaowro; April 15. —Down at the ram -
shackle length of buildiug facing.. on Fro nt
Street. the Legislative Assembly continue s to
pursue the even tenor of its way, but the en d
is drawing near. While there has not been
displayed much of that fierce white heat of
debate which• so delights the partizan's soul,
the session thus far has not been entirely
uneventful. It has shown that, in debate,,
both sides of the House have profited by the
recent election and the changes consequent
thereupon. While the Ministerialists have
still an immense advantage, the retort cour -
teous from the Oppositiouista comes with
better. will than in the previous parliament.
On the Government side Treasurer Harcourt
has made a name for himself both as to elo-
quence and grasp, arid of the new members
across the aisle the champion ()Milord Rights,.
Mr. Miscampbell, is rapidly making history
for himself. But it is surprising what a large
proportion of the members rarely trouble the
House with thelr opinions. The minority do
the talking and help on the work of legislating
brit—at pay clay "'they are ali` in it' I well
remember one member last session who sat in
the back row of the Opposition. He was the
most modest and uuagressive man in the
House. Twiddling his thumbs was his daily
amusement. and I never saw him unbend even
to address a letter or pamphlet to his consti
ren s. peecwas golden i.i . is case au ' no
to be lightly thrown away, and therefore he
econonmized in that direction. How he even
strayed into the House is still an unsolve d
mystery.. However, both sides are troubled
with these drones. and in some cases seem to.
incur the half -pitying contempt of their
fellows.
Some little surprise was created at the
amiable treatment given by the opposition to
the Budget statement,' but it looks as if the
explanation were at hand. Mr. Miscampliell's
motion of a few days ago would lead us tb sup-
pose that the battle of the Sep. Schools is to be
fought out again. Mr. Meredith's utteranc es
sirce the session opened also concern with th is
view. . As the Government is absolutely
impregnable in the management of its
finances, there is no headway to be made
fighting for a forlorn hope ; so he assume s •a
position that may eventually lead to success.
It is true that there is an element of uncer -
tainty as to the feasibility of abolishing' the
Separate Schools, but the discussion will do no
serious harm,,as all disturbing questions hav e
to be met and" thoroughly threshed out some
time. Should it lead to the time when all
classes and creeds receive their receive their
education at the hands of the State, to my
mind, it will prove a, source of'blessing and not
an unmixed evil.
There is a rumor afloat that the Government
intend creating another portfolio, and that the
bland and genial Nicholas Awrey, of South
Wentworth, will be the fortunate member.
The reason for all this' is the alleged .excessive
duties of the Crown Lands Department. The
new minister, so it is said, will have control of
the minerals and the mining policyof the
Government;
The members for the Bruces are basking in
in the sunlight of Government favor this
session. Mr. nick is assistant whip, Mr.
O'Connor has a chairmanship, and Mr. Porter
has received a small appropriation towards
opening tip roads in the peninsula.' Mr. Dock
has also introduced' several important bills,
which have been very favorably received, and
which are now being raiscussed in committee,
Goldwin Smith's new book on "Canada,"
dealing with the knotty problems of Canadian
' politics is exclaivg widespread e,ttention; and
is having a large sale.. The volume i, written
in Mr. Smith's well-known masterly st,1e, and
is the product of an impartial wind, however
noon may differ as to his conclusions.

THE. NAME "SEPOY."
7o the Editor of the Sentinel
DEAR SIR,=With regard to' the
paragraph in your last issue, noticing
the formation of . a base -ball club in.
Wingham styling itself "Sepoys," I
take exception ; and may I ask on
what grounds it • assumes the irarne 2•
To my mind, it is a piece of sublime
Presumption, smacking strongly of the
phrase. "Assume a virtue, if you have
it n.ot." The • name Sepoy is time-
honored in Lucknow. Under this
title, in times past, our lacrosse,, base- •
ball, and cricket clubs have gone forth
to battle, especially , .the former of the
.trio, winning • many proud triumphs
and shedding an added lustre on the
history of local sport and the prowess
of our y oung men. In appropriating
the title, do our Wingham friends
wish to sail under false colors, or do
they wish to realize or share it. • the
glorious successes of bygone days 4 '
Why they should otherwise adopt it is •
not 'at'all clear.
From s 'historical point of view, I
can at presentrecall, only one other
place in ,Ontario entitled to assume
sucha title—the little 'vil lagef of Delhi .
in'Ox ford or Elgin county. But it, is
peculiarly approprite here, where our
very name is East Indian, and nearly
all our thoroughfares are called after
those brave.and enduring heroes of the
terrible Indian Mutiny; and here also
have lived not a few of the sturdy
veterans who,, under the noble Hayti
locks has Swept, on•. irresistibly from the
cantonments of Calcutta . to the
beleagured walls of Lucknow, or who
with the old Hero of the Alma, Sir
Colin Campbell, saw the dark waters
of the Goomjie and the secon(1 relief '
of* Lucknow.. No, no ; these narnes
and tbeir associations are peculiar and
dear to. us ; to -us they have a deep,
significance, that shall live as lens as
our batl'lenaents raise their heads :
and so, as an old . Sepoy, one who;
with old comrades, 'has battled on
'Many athletic fields in bygone year,
and has seen the historic old banoei- ,rt
the Sepoys carried to gldrious victory,
I beg to protest against its assumption
by our Wingham friends, who lig' fro"
earthly' 'or other reason are ri:;•htly
entitled .,to it. I trust the old N" lx,y
everywhere; will raise their voices
against the "steal." .
