The Lucknow curlers have had but
little practice this season which
accounts for their two recent defeats.
A Black Sheep
The Rev Wad Elward, who lectured
in Lucknow about two years ago, is
gaining unenviable. ° notoriety. The

night train, haneuffed and in 'the bag-
gage car. He was being taken back to
some point east to answer a charge of
fraud.
Council Meeting
The Council met according to
statute on. Monday last when the
reeve and all the councillors except
councillor Murdoch, who was absent,
took ' the necessary declaration, of
office. The Council elected M. Camp-
bell, jr.,
auditor, and the reeve ap
panted Robert Findlater. A couple
of accounts were passed and a motion
was also passed placing three more
electric lights on the streets.
Nearly a Fire •
A qeentity of coal oil was accident-
ly upset on the floorof Miss McLaren's
dress -making shop; over W. Connell's
dry goods store _on Wednesday, and

from ” the floor, one of the ladies
touched a lighted match to the oil,
which suddenly burst into flames', and
for a time created quite a consterna-
tion amongst the girls. Fortunately
the fire was extinguished, before any
amage was done.
Sad Accident
A young man named James Thom,
son of Mr Wm •Thom, of St Helen's
nret with a tad"fatal accident in 'the
woods near Whitechurch on Friday last.'
He was engaged with others saving
timber whenAJahiog tree_chrusbed
him beneath its weight, causing such
injuries as to result in his death or,
Monday last. He was a young man
about twenty ,years of age and much
respected by the whole neighborhood
The family have the, sympathy of -all
in their sad affliction, and the funeral

Orange District Lodge •
The annual ineeting of the Kinloss
District Orange Association, was liesi

The 77th birthday of Sir John A.
McDonald passed away with many
congratulations to the aged chieftain,
amongst the many who called to pay
their respects, it was noticable how

Passed Home
The township of Kinloss last. week
lost one of its oldest and most esteemed
• residents; by the stern hand of death/
in the person of Mr. John Young, aged
.52 years. Deceased was one of the
earliest settlers in the township, hav-
ing resided there for over 36.years,,

Wednesday, the 14th ihst., was greatly

residence of the bride's brother,. Mr.
J. H. Nulilo, Toronto, when.Paul C.
Carmichael, of the Merchants bank,
Toronto, and Annie D., third daugh-
ter of Jas. Mullin, post master, Bel-
fast, were united in the•holy bonds of
matrimony by the Rev, Mr. Patterson.
The happy couple left on the noon
train for .Montreal, where they will
spend a fele Weeks after which they
will return to their home in Teronto
